- [NOTICE to readers: This message is fairly long description of what
- happened to my AmiFile-Safe partition a few days ago. AFS claims
- in it's advertisments that one would not need to worry about non-
- validated disks anymore. This is true but other, more severe problems
- lie ahead. This is not a flame but a warning and a request for help.
- Please continue...]

-
- After almost five years of FFS validation blues and two large-scale file
- rescue missions, I purchased the promising AmiFile-Safe Pro. Yet I thought
- this would not happen ever again, my boot partition is now corrupt.
-
- A few days ago something happened during startup. The WB loaded ok but
- right after that the screen trashed and the system was locked up. With
- sweaty palms I turned off my valiant A2000, then powered it up again.
-
- A dreadful requester was waiting for me just after primary boot sequence:
- "MODE_SMALL NOT YET IMPLEMENTED". This message was from the AmiFile-Safe
- system and the only response available was "OK". Ok, I thought, and
- pressed the gadget resulting the same requester popping open again.
- Another click on the gadget finally did something:
-
- Software Failure #8000 0005 at task DH0
-
- So I can't boot up nor mount DH0: which is my AFS boot partition.
- Fortunately I do have another partition on another disk that has a two-
- month old backup of the now corrupted disk. Unfortunately I have been
- updating and improving my system very significantly in these two months.
-
- "Keep yourself calm", I thought. The problem occurs during the primary
- boot sequence so it must be the RDB that has been corrupted. My hard disk
- is a Quantum Maverick 540S, divided into 4 partitions: 2 AFS and 2 FFS.
- Only the first AFS partition is corrupt which leaves the rest of the disk
- still usable. I can disable DH0 from the pre-boot menu (I'm running
- AmigaOS 3.1) and then boot from another partition. This enables me to run
- some HD tools, namely HDToolBox and RDPrep. With these tools I did the
- following:
- 1. removed all filesystems from the RDB (with HDToolBox)
- 2. re-installed the filesystems (AFS and FFS) with RDPrep and
- 3. set the partitions to use these new installations (again with RDPrep)
-
- Result: nothing changed. All other partitions are ok and the DH0: still
- pops up the requester and eventually summons up the Guru.
-
- Now I am clueless. I sent a fax to Fourth Level Development although
- I have heard that their customer support is next to nothing but my faith
- was strong (and my despair even stronger). Received no reply yet but I
- am not ready to surrender.
-
- AFS performed great but Fourth Level shouldn't have assumed that things
- like this never happened. The documentation does not even mention error
- situations and certainly does not include a troubleshooting section. The
- customer support does not reply and even if they are so busy that they do
- not have time to concentrate on my problem, they could at least acknoweledge
- faxes and emails sent to them telling that they are busy and that it could
- take some time for them to reply properly.
-
- So, Fourth Level: Documentate better and reorganise your customer support.
- Don't promise something you cannot hold on. Even your advertised claims of
- error-free system are a big lie.
-
- Customers: Demand value for your money. I bought a commercial product but
- got shareware service. It bloody well does not matter if Amiga business is
- not so big business.
-
- Fellow Amigists: Any help would be greatly appreciated. Similar experiences
- or ideas of how to recover the data from the corrupt partition are received
- with joy.
-
-
- Keep the Faith,
- The Truth is Out There,
- Yours,
